How to Export & Back Up Your CycleVault Data

Your CycleVault data lives on your device — and only on your device. That makes it completely private, but it also means you're responsible for keeping it safe. This guide shows you exactly how to back it up, restore it, and move it between devices.

Why this matters

CycleVault never sends your data to a server. The trade-off: if you clear your browser, switch devices, or reinstall your browser, your data is gone unless you've exported a backup. A monthly export is all it takes.

First: how CycleVault stores your data

CycleVault saves your cycle information using your browser's local storage — a small, private storage area that lives inside your browser on your device. Think of it like a notebook only your browser can open, that never gets copied anywhere online.

This means:

⚠ Important

Browser local storage is not a permanent backup. Back up your data regularly — especially before clearing your browser or switching devices.

How to export your data

CycleVault lets you download your full history as a single file, so you can save it, move it, or restore it later.

1

Open CycleVault in your browser

Navigate to cyclevault.app in the browser where your data is stored. It must be the same browser and device you've been tracking with — your data won't appear elsewhere.

2

Go to Settings

Tap the Settings icon (the gear ⚙) in the navigation. This opens your data and privacy options.

3

Select "Export Data"

Under the Your Data section, tap Export Data. CycleVault prepares your data and downloads a file named something like cyclevault-backup-2026-06.json.

4

Save the file somewhere safe

Move the downloaded file to a location you control and trust — your phone's local file storage, an external drive, or a personal encrypted cloud folder (not a shared drive). Don't send it to anyone; it contains your private health information.

✓ Good to know

The export file is plain JSON. It contains only your data — no account details, no device identifiers, nothing that identifies you. It's a clean copy of your cycle records.

How to restore or import your data

If you're moving to a new device, switching browsers, or restoring after clearing your storage, here's how to get your data back.

1

Open CycleVault on the new browser or device

Go to cyclevault.app. You'll see a fresh tracker with no data — that's expected.

2

Go to Settings → Import Data

Open Settings ⚙ and choose Import Data.

3

Select your backup file

Choose the .json backup file you exported earlier. CycleVault reads it and restores all your cycle data to the new browser's local storage.

4

Confirm your data is there

Close Settings and check your calendar. Your cycle history, notes, and symptom logs should all be back.

⚠ Note

Importing replaces any existing data in the current browser with the data from your file. If you've added entries since your last backup, those newer entries will be overwritten. Always keep your backup file up to date.

How to clear your CycleVault data from a browser

If you're using a shared computer, selling a device, or want to start fresh, you can permanently delete your CycleVault data by clearing local storage in your browser.

🌐 Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and go to cyclevault.app.
  2. Click the lock 🔒 icon in the address bar.
  3. Select Site settings.
  4. Scroll to Usage and tap Delete data.

🦊 Firefox

  1. Open Firefox and go to cyclevault.app.
  2. Click the lock icon in the address bar.
  3. Select Clear cookies and site data.
  4. Confirm deletion.

🧭 Safari

  1. Go to Safari → Settings → Privacy.
  2. Click Manage Website Data.
  3. Search for cyclevault.app.
  4. Select it and click Remove.

📱 Mobile (iOS / Android)

  1. Open your browser's settings.
  2. Go to Privacy → Clear browsing data.
  3. Select Cached data and site storage, or use site-specific settings if available.
💡 Before you clear

Always export your data first if there's any chance you'll want it later. Once local storage is cleared, your data cannot be recovered — not even by us, because we never held it.

How often should you back up?

There's no single right answer, but here are some practical guidelines:

Keeping your backup file private

Your exported backup file contains your full cycle history. Treat it like any sensitive health document:

✓ Remember

The whole point of CycleVault is that your data stays yours. Treat your backup file with the same care you'd give to any private health record — because that's exactly what it is.

Open CycleVault

Export, import, and manage your backups directly in Settings. No account required.
